A sad amen to all of that truth there. Recently it's come to light that a state in the US was sterilizing black women up through the 1970's and the women survivors that are alive testified. I feel such anger towards the medical establishment and what I term fake science. It's like this: Fuck everyone else a white man has a preconceived theory or idea and will trample on EVERYTHING in his way to try to make himself look smart or successful in the eyes of his stupid colleagues.

Uh, huh. The supremacy of technology/science over ethics. Let's just start naming the infinite list of ethical tragedies undertaken by white male-dominated sciences. Marion Sims, founder of gynecology, who carved up black slave women's vaginas without anesthetic (which was available at that time), immediately comes to mind. And, of course, the US government's use of syphilis-infected prostitutes to deliberately infect Guatamelan prisoners with the disease in order to test effectiveness of antibiotics. And the forced sterilization of US Native women in the 60s and 70s, who going in for surgeries for appendectomies etc. woke up with tubal ligations or to find their wombs gone. And....the list is long, long, long.....I am fairly confident to say that "gawdoftruth" is a white male. Almost everyone one else is pretty wary of the "ethics" of science and technology.

All of this shit comes together in really disturbing ways. Taking these practices and rewriting them as identities makes you a prudish bigot on many circles if you try to deconstruct these things. It's unsettling how the sexual liberation craze eventually devolved into such a free-for-all that there is no such thing as a practice too distorted to be an acceptable target for concern.

Oh there's tons! Ursula LeGuin was my early introduction, and she's still amazing. Even her old stuff has held up really well. My particular favorite is "The Dispossessed." "The Left Hand of Darkness" is also fantastic and her short stories are great too, "Four Ways to Forgiveness," "The Wind's Twelve Quarters," "Searoad" (which is just fiction, not scifi), and another novel about slavery which I can't remember the name of. All very good stuff.

Sheri Tepper's books are great! She does have kind of a formula, but she's so good you don't mind until like the sixth book or so. Especially see "Grass," "The Family Tree," "Gibbon's Decline and Fall," "The Gate to Women's Country," "The Margarets," and "Raising the Stones." Oh never mind, they're all good. The only issue I have with her is lesbian invisibility/heterosexism.

I recently read Kate Elliott's Crossroads trilogy, that was very good both in terms of sexual politics and sexual orientation. Her longer series I didn't like as much.

Oh, and Laurie Marks! If I had to pick one fictional world to move to it would be hers. She has a trilogy starting with "Fire Logic" and I'm still waiting on the fourth one. It is amazing because she has created a world where sexism and heterosexism simply do not exist -- yet her story revolves around very basic themes of dominance and otherness that we all can recognize.

An old favorite: Marge Piercy's "Woman on the Edge of Time." Another fictional world I'd be glad to visit. Also Eleanor Arnason's "Ring of Swords."

I'd avoid everything by Marion Zimmer Bradley except "The Mists of Avalon" because she suffers from the same internalized misogyny/heterosexism that Anne McCaffrey does. Some women swear by her because of Thendara House but actually her HUSBAND wrote the pledge of the women sworn to women and I read a comment by her about how she could never be a lesbian because she couldn't stand "sameness" all the time. I mean, how woman-hating is that, that women are all the same?

Excited to see other suggestions, hoping someone will mention something I haven't read yet!
